A decade ago, I released “Impromptu”, an album that was recorded with no preparation or rehearsals. And now I’m releasing an album of solo piano improvisations.

I’m sensing a theme here.

I guess the years spent playing jazz whet my appetite for improvising, and I’ve continued that on journey to the point where I’m now making music with no starting point whatsoever. I just sit at the piano, hit record, and see what happens.

Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn’t (and other times, it *really* doesn’t), but it’s a process that’s been endlessly fascinating, and a wonderful balm for troubled times.

An interesting side effect of untethering myself from any starting material is that I’ve been able to pull in elements from the various kinds of music that have influenced me over the years. I’ve always been interested in lots of different styles (the streaming service algorithms don’t know what to do with me), and have never felt at home when I focused on just one.

But in an improvised space, there’s room for just about anything. I can drop in some of the jazz chords that have been a big part of my music-making for the last two decades, but I can also reach back to my classical roots, and bring in some of the ambient music I love so deeply.

In many ways, these tracks are the most personal of anything I’ve released to date.
